The CPI is based on prices of food, clothing, shelter, and fuels, transportation fares, charges for doctors' and dentists' services, drugs, and the other goods and services that people buy for day-to-day living. The CPI-U includes, in addition to wage earners and clerical workers, groups such as professional, managerial, and technical workers, the self-employed, short-term workers, the unemployed, and retirees and others not in the labor force. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes CPIs for two population groups: (1) a CPI for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) which covers approximately 93 percent of the total population and (2) a CPI for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) which covers 29 percent of the total population. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a fixed market basket of goods and services. The energy index fell 7.5 percent for the 12 months ending in April, largely contributed to a 12.5-percent decrease in the gasoline index. The electricity index also declined 0.8 percent over the bi-monthly period, while the gasoline index rose 2.3 percent. The energy index declined 0.8 percent from February to April. The food at home index rose 6.5 percent over the past year as five of the six major grocery store food group indexes increased. The food index advanced 8.6 percent for the 12 months ending in April, led by a 12.4-percent increase in the food away from home index. Within the food at home index, increases were noted for other food at home meats, poultry, fish, and eggs and nonalcoholic beverages and beverage materials. The food index increased 1.5 percent from February to April, reflecting increases in the food away from home (+2.0 percent) and food at home (+1.2 percent) indexes.
